Job Announcement:
Field Technicians needed for Owl Census in High-elevation Habitats

Two biological technicians are needed for a population census and nest
survey of owls in high-elevation habitats of western North Carolina. The
study will look at placement of owl territories and nesting success in
relation to locations of human activity. Work of technicians will begin
with auditor censuses along high-elevation trails at night. Once
territories are located, work will also include some daytime hours spent
finding and checking nests. The work is rigorous. Rock climbing and winter
backpacking skills are real pluses. GPS experience is also beneficial but
not essential.

Work runs from early March to mid to late May. Weekly hours will be
variable, depending on weather and stage of the project. Salary is $12/hr
for field time and gas is compensated. Because it is part-time work,
preference will be given to individuals already settled in the WNC area who
can regularly devote time to night work. Most of the work will be after
normal business hours, so taking this on as a second job is not out of the
question.

If interested, send your resume and a cover letter, briefly describing
auditory census experience, backpacking and rock climbing skills, and, if
working elsewhere during the field season, expected hours of the day
available to work on a consistent basis. Send by post or email to the
address below before January 20, 2003. If you have questions, please
contact me by email.
