Winston-Salem, Forsyth County Christmas Bird Count Results 12/28/2002

The Winston-Salem NC Christmas Bird Count was blessed this year with very
nice weather. The cool weather (24 degrees to 48 degrees) did not seem so
bad due to almost no wind and some nice sunshine.

We saw a high number (for us) of species (82) which reflects the great
conditions. New high count totals of Buffleheads (23), Ruddy Ducks (42),
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (41), Hummingbirds (4) (3 Rufous and one
unidentified to species (as of yet) selasphorus sp), Hermit Thrush (11),
Chipping Sparrow (27), Fox Sparrow (10), and Rusty Blackbirds (359). The
Winston-Salem CBC has been conducted since the 1940's.

Unusual species include the hummingbirds mentioned above along with 3
Richardson's Canada Geese (subspecies).

We had a total of 48 counters and 15588 individuals seen.

The entire count can be seen on the web at www.audubon.org.
