Cats vs. birdfeeders

I think it likely that we do not do birds any permanent good directly by
putting up feeders.
However, we need to consider the educational value by making it easier for
people to learn something about birds and their ecology.
Like many of you, Judy and I do talks and slide shows on birds to groups of
various kinds from first graders to adults. Many of these people know birds
only from feeding them. Often they become interested enough to protect
habitat, contribute to conservation organizations, participate in counts,
etc. This, I think, is significant.
As to cats, I find them easy to discourage from hanging around. Soaking with
a water hose usually works.
