Bear Island etc



The following are highlights of a Charleston County Park bird trip to Bear
Island and Donnelley wildlife management areas on February 13, 2003.  78
species were seen and/or heard.  The most interesting were; 100 White
pelicans, 1000 White Ibis 150 Glossy Ibis, 60 Tundra Swans, 600 Wood Ducks,
750 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 Bufflehead, 7 adult and 1 first year Bald Eagles, 3
northern Harriers, 1 American Kestrel, 30 Bonaparte's Gulls, 1 Great Horned
Owl on nest, 1 Barred Owl, 30 Eastern Bluebirds, 3 Palm Warblers, 7 Fox
Sparrows, and 125 Eastern Meadowlarks.  The White Pelicans, swans, horned
Owl and many other birds were seen from the gate at the Crooked Creek area.
The Horned Owl is nesting in an abandoned eagle nest across the water to the
right of the gate.
