Birding terminology (was "swoops of martins")

I started out as a birdwatcher forty-odd years ago. Somewhere along the way
I was graduated to being a "birder" doing "birding" instead of
"birdwatching." Does anyone remember just when this mass matriculation took
place? Or how? Or why?

Cheers!
