Hello this is a March 28 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring 
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird 
Club. Highlights on this report include: 

ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD
SWAINSON'S HAWK
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK
RAZORBILLS
RED-NECKED GREBES
SWALLOW-TAILED-KITES


An imm. male ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen in Manteo, NC. Call 
Elayne Kodroff at 252-473-2943 for updates on this bird. This is a first 
state record for North Carolina.

An imm. SWAINSON'S HAWK is being seen at Alligator River NWR in NC. Look in 
the fields and sky at the intersection of Milltail and Long Curve Rds at the 
refuge. Milltail Rd. is the entrance road off of US 64. The hawk was last 
reported 3-27.

The male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK at Elizabeth City, NC is still being seen as 
of 3-27. Call the Remaleys at 252-338-3492.

Birders along coasts of both Carolinas should check the ocean often for 
RAZORBILLS and other alcids.Flocks of RAZORBILLS have been reported the last 
couple of days from Pea Island NWR, Atlantic Beach, NC; and Wrightsville 
Beach, NC.

RED-NECKED GREBES have been seen in the surf recently at Nags Head, NC and in 
the pond near the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry terminal on Ocracoke Island. This 
pond is right by Hwy. 12.

SWALLOW-TAILED KITES in NC have appeared at Wilmington and Pea Island NWR in 
the last week.
