New Hope Audubon Speaker for Thursday

Sorry for the late post- I just now received this information. Also,
please note that normal business will be very short, and the talk will
begin at 7:30 pm. Thanks.

Please join us at the New Hope Audubon's April meeting!

Date: Thursday, April 3, 2003
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: Totten Center, NC Botanical Gardens, Chapel Hill

Speaker: Peter Schubert--note change
Topic: Native North Carolina Flora

Peter works for the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and among his
many duties is to ensure that the new EPA campus in Research Triangle
Park is environmentally friendly. He also ensures that the EPA is a
good land steward. Instead of mowing down all the trees to build the
seven buildings, he worked with the builders so that few trees were
cut down and, now, there are forests instead of large lawns. He also
worked with the landscapers to ensure native plants were used
and, before the land clearing began, he organized a plant rescue.

Peter will talk about native North Carolina flora including those
species that benefit wildlife. He will also discuss what he has done
to his yard to minimize his lawn, cultivate native gardens, establish
a native wildflower slope, establish a moist habitat ditch and
backyard storm water pond, collect rain in cisterns, and other ideas
for
improving a back yard. Everyone is welcome and we'll see you there!
