Catfish Lake, Croatan Forest NC

Birded Catfish Road in the Croatan Forest today after
heavy showers. When the rain went away the birds came out!

About 3 miles from Highway 58 a very wet Great Horned Owl
was sighted between 11am and Noon. This bird flew twice for us.

At the Bridge on the Jones county line the following birds were sighted:

Purple Martins
Barn Swallows
Prothonantary Warblers
Black-and-white Warbler
Swainson's Warbler
Common Yellowthroats

Further down the road:
Indigo Buntings
Blue Grosbeaks
Prairie Warbler (over 50 seen)
Pine Warblers
Yellow-throated Vireo
Yellow-throated Warbler

I made this drive a month ago and was overwhelmed by the
number of Great-crested Flycatchers and Eastern Kingbirds
seen around Catfish Lake. Today neither species was seen
or heard near the lake (Kingbirds were seen closer to Highway
58, but none where they were so numerous last month).

The only bird seen around Catfish lake was a single Willet seen
in flight.

Upon leaving the Catfish Lake road (where the road becomes paved)
an Eastern Kingbird was dogging a Red-tailed Hawk.
