Cape fear swallow tail kites - Success

Hi,

Yesterday I ran into a few other birders at the before-mentioned produce stand and locks and dams in search of kites.

Eventhough most of the day proved to be somewhen unproductive we did spot one Mississippi early in the day by the locks, along with some anhingas, GBH, turkey vultures, swallows and egrets.

I took a little detour to the Southport & Lake Waccamaw areas in the middle of the day.

I returned to the produce stand around 5 pm I watched 5 Swallow-tailed kites soaring(?) high above the field across from the produce stand and about 40 mins later saw 3 more around the locks. Unfortunately by that time all other birders seemed to have gone home and I got to enjoy them with Sleepy Dickson, the proprietor of the produce stand.

After that I spent a few hours around the swamp on NC 11 just north of the cape fear bridge. This proved to be a spectacular location. Here I studied the fishing methods of a green heron, 2 Belted kingfishers, and 2 little blue herons. The green heron and kingfisher both allowed me to watch them at pretty close range.

All in all not a bad day at 23 interesting species and a few for my life list.
