Ruby-thorat activity

Dear All,

Indeed there is a lot of feeder action right now. Numerous folks are
reporting record numbers of Ruby-throateds at their feeders. But (as
always)
there are also those who are seeing significantly fewer hummers too. Sadly,
my peak this year was no where near last year's. Eight at a time was my
high count here during the third week of July. Why this was the case is
hard to say. There may simply be more people in my neighborhood feeding
hummingbirds this summer. Or perhaps the weather (especially the cool wet
early summer) has made brood rearing more difficult.

But regardless, migration has begun. I have had a parade of adult males
through the yard during the past week. I have caught most of them and all
have been unbanded amazingly enough. Each one has been in heavy body molt
and had begun to put on weight--and were as feisty as ever.

Yes, the fun is far from over!
