albino hummer in Chapel Hill

Dear All,

The albino Ruby-throated Hummingbird in the Chapel Hill area continues to be
seen regularly at the feeders of Becky Laskody.

Bill Hilton and I made a visit in the rain on Friday to band this marvelous
bird (more from Bill on this including photos on the Hilton Pond website).
She has been named "Angel" and very aptly so. Having pink bill, eyes and
feet she is the first full albino Ruby-throat to be banded in North
Carolina. Although other leucistsic hummers have been documented here in
late summer none has ever been studied closely before. You may remember
that last summer Wayne Irvin got fabulous photos of the albino in north
Raleigh. But, alas, I missed even seeing it by a day.

This amazing creature has been present about two weeks and many in the
neighborhood have seen her around the area. Birders are welcome but must
call Becky (919-929-5710) to make arrangements and get directions. It is
very important that you call first, not only because the location is a bit
difficult to find but in order to respect the privacy of the Laskodys and
their neighbors.

Since Bill is currently out of town, any questions may be directed to me.
