With the arrival of August, a maze of spiderwebs makes it difficult
to walk the trails at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History.
One of the most common web-spinning species is the spiny-back spider,
Micrathena gracilis, whose abdomen bears sharp projections that
probably deter predators. For a photo essay about this interesting
arachnid, visit "This Week at Hilton Pond" for the period 15-21
August 2003 at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek030815.html
As always there's a tally of birds banded, plus a list of
Ruby-throated Hummingbird returns. This week we include a photo of a
Zabulon Skipper sunning on a Pickerweed leaf.
Happy Nature Watching!
