Hilton Pond 09/08/03 (Shagbark Hickory)

It's been dangerous lately to run mist nets at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History because of a barrage of nuts falling from a towering Shagbark Hickory.

For a photo essay about this magnificent tree--and what's causing the fruit to fall--please visit "This Week at Hilton Pond" for 8-14 September 2003 at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek030908.html

As always we include a tally of birds banded--it was our best week of 2003 for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds--as well as a list of significant recaptures. The avian mug shot of the week is a young migrant Chestnut-sided Warbler.

Happy Nature Watching!
