Re: Urgent, West Nile Virus

My name is Marcee Toliver, and I work for NC DENR, Public Health Pest Management
Section. We are the state entity responsible for tracking West Nile Virus in North
Carolina. You can report dead birds online by going to http://www.ncwnv.com.

We have been restricted to testing only target species - crows, blue jays, cardinals
and hawks - and can only test birds from a county until one of the birds tested is
positive. Since Hampstead is in Pender county, and they have already had two
positive birds this season (both were in the testing process at the same time) I
doubt that they will want to submit the bird for testing. You can contact Darlene
Lewis at the Pender Co. Health Dept. for more local information.

I do urge you to report ALL birds that you find sick or ill in North Carolina. We
are building a database on bird mortality in the state, and this information will be
very helpful.

If you need more information, please don't hesistate to contact me. I tried to reply
to your email over the weekend, but my Road Runner service has been problematic, and
I could not get the email to go out. I apologize for the delay.
