Hi folks,
Birded Southern Shores and Duck, NC this morning for a
couple of hours and found lots of passerines. Several
Blackburnian, Cape May, Black-and-white Warblers,
loads of Redstarts. Also a few Palms, Prairies,
Black-throated Blue and Magnolia Warblers. One each of
Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-throated Green and
WILSON'S WARBLER (nice male). Found another (or the
same) PHILADELPHIA VIREO feeding on Prickly Ash
berries. Also had a couple of Blue Grosbeaks, several
Red-eyed Vireos, a White-eyed Vireo, a flock of 10
Cedar Waxwings, several small flocks of Bobolinks,
lots of Baltimore Orioles, Tree and Barn Swallows, a
couple of Kestrels.
Walking the beach later, Joan and I found 7 Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, mostly adults, in less than a
mile's distance. Lots of debris in the ocean and on
the beach, mostly beach access stairs and walkways and
pier pilings. I believe the Outer Banks Pier,
Jennette's Pier, Nags Head Pier and Kitty Hawk Pier
all suffered substantial damage from Isabel. I haven't
heard anything about the Avalon Pier.
Access to Dare County is still limited to residents
and property owners and we are still on and off
curfews so I haven't been able to get to the Wright
Brothers Monument to find all those rare shorebirds.
Yet.
