Hilton Pond 09/15/03 (Strawberry-bush)

In autumn many folks look toward the mountains as a destination to see spectacular colors. In our judgment, we've got a much brighter view right here at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, where the Strawberry-bush, Euonymus americanus, is showing off its brilliant red berries.

For a photo essay about this colorful but often-overlooked native plant, please visit "This Week at Hilton Pond" for 15-21 September 2003 at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek030915.html

We include our usual weekly totals of birds recaptured and newly banded, including some notes about a late rush of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. As a bonus, there's a mug shot of a migrant Swainson's Thrush, looking rather elegant.

Happy Nature Watching,

BILL
