If you take that attitude, that means that the driver's tests have
to become a lot more stringent. Mine (PA) involved nothing on public
roads, and nothing over 10 MPH (the officer actually asked me to shift
into second so he was "sure I knew how to drive a stick." as if that
meant anything. And I was going so slow I had to shift right back down
again.)
If the test was a meaningful test of driving ability, then driver's
ed would have to begome more rigorous so people would pass their
driver's tests. Any way you look at it, something has to be done.
IMHO, the government has failed in its responsibility to ensure that
I am competent. Sure, I think I am, but who knows? The last time I
took any kind of test was 5 years ago, when I was 16. And what about
people who are in their 80's? Do you think that they all have the same
judgement and reflexes that they did when they got their licenses? Some
might... but deinitely not all of them.
