in San Francisco. I arrived late last night after a heavy 24-hour door-door journey, much of which was spent waiting in Gatwick and Atlanta airports for standby flights. Here's a mantra for you all. "Don't Do Delta. Don't Do Delta." They're like the Forgotten Fleet - scuzzy planes, cynical, bitchy, burnt-out staff (think of the cast of Casualty, aged then frozen in time, at 39,000 feet). I got a half-cup of icy water spilled on me by a degenerate air hostess neither batted an eyelid, paused for breath, or stopped to apologize. The best thing on the flight was Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean - an otherwise crappy film rescued by his superb performance. Like a night out with your best pal, when he's in the best of moods (you know who you are...). Anyhow - In future, I'm swimming the Atlantic.
So, I woke up this morning to blue skies and warm weather - in the 70s, with a fresh ocean breeze. The famous city streets are bathed in California sunshine; later on and for the next three days the Blue Angels will soar, swoop, and loop-the-loop over the city. I missed the excesses of the Folsom Street Fair only to land in the middle of Fleet Week. So the sailors are in town....
