Janine Yagielski began the discussion by giving an overview of archiving at CNN. She identified problems, like changing content in wire stories that get updated throughout the day, and strategies for saving Web pages. CNN has an internal archiving system for Web content. It automatically saves main section fronts for a week. Librarians can decide what to save for longer than a week. The system also keeps secondary information about the site, like statistics, for a week. Olivia Kobelt of the Christian Science Monitor works on converting print pages to Web content. She gave an overview of the Monitor's workflow. Since all of the Web content is kept on the site, the ability to find content is important. Stories older than five days are deleted from the general search engine, but are retained in the archive search and made available for a fee. They are working on implementing XML for better searching. Olivia also addressed the issue of correcting things on the Web. Barry Abisch addressed the role of the librarian in the archiving process. Barry said that librarians should be involved in the Web edition of the news publication, just as we are involved in print versions. Mark Stencel of The Washington Post gave a business case for archiving. He pointed out how archiving works to a business' advantage and ways to repurpose original content. He shared many concrete examples from the Washington Post's Web site, like a database about recent real estate transactions. |
