News research by the beat
By Carolyn Edds

News researchers are generalists who need to be experts on any topic, often in deadline situations. This year, the topic of the CE course is "News Research by the Beat." It promises to be an information-packed day. Speakers from other SLA divisions will share with us the best resources to use while researching her or his respective field. In addition, the speakers will walk through some news research scenarios during their presentations.

Barbara Post of the Transportation Research Board at the National Academy of Sciences will tell us about transportation resources. Paul Brock of AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP will share resources to use while researching health and pharmaceutical technology. Constance Ard of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald PLLC will discuss legal resources. Barbara J. Fox (B.J.) and Marie O'Mara of the Defense Technical Information Center will team up to tell us about military resources. To end the day, Mary Ellen Bates of Bates Information Service will tell us about the best tools for both business and finance and telecommunications research.

After learning about all these resources, you will be better prepared to answer research requests on these topics and will have some great information to share with your newsroom colleagues when you return from the SLA conference. I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio.
