THE CRISIS OF
MELTDOWN
The melting glaciers of iceland and the
two opposite poles of our planet, menancingly threat to become into liquid state
adding to the mass of water to result in imbalance in composition of the earth.
The global warming, el-nino and the like factors are said to be the cause
of this. The human inhabitants fear this and the fear is not unfounded, perhaps
the reasons are.
The space mission accompoished by our
space scientists recently, is hallmark of their achievements. Yes, indeed the
allusion is towards the space vessel whcih returned to earth safely. The space
shuttle re-entering earth at an immense speed, gathering momentum in geometric
proprotions as it pierces the earth's atmosphere has to be deccelerated lest the
heat melts down the materials encompassing the satellite, blowing it off
into bits and pieces, in seconds.
These apprehensions are not new.Centuries
ago, the divine apostles indeed feared such meltdown not to the planet but to
themslves. One may question, why should AzvAr-s who are supposed to be above
their self, fear such meltdown . As their name takes from the fact that they are
deeply submerged in the auspicious qualities of EmperumAn, they fear that such
meltdown should deny them the luxury of experienceing the pleasure of basking in
the glory of Lord's kalyANa guNangaL.
On seeing Periya PerumAL reclining on the
serpant couch, Sri ThoNdaradipodi AzvAr wondered how the public at large
were able to withstand such an attack of Mercy flowing from the Lord's beauty.
'vudal enakk vurugumAlOA! en
seigEan vulagathErEa' thirumAlai.
Sri PeriyAzvAr mentions that he consumes
the Lord which melts dowon his physique. 'vudal vurugi vAi thiRandhu maduthunnai niRaithuk-koNDEan'
PeriyAzvhwAr thriumozhi 5-4.
Sri Nam AzvAr appeals to the Lord Himself
to remove all such crisis of meltdown. "Oh! Lord, Please remove all such
obstacles which will deprive me of cherishing your
auspicious qualities' The ThiruvAimozhi
nUtrandhAdhi pAsuram descirbes this in no uncertain terms.
'piRandhulagam
kAthaLikkum pEAr arut kaNNA vun siRandha guNathAl vurugm sElath thiram thavirndhu...' ThiruvAimozhi
nUtrandhAdhi 50;
The appearance of the Almighty, His
auspicious attributes meltdown AzvAr-s.
The Lord, who is source of immortal,
ceaseless, eternal sweetness, bestows His mercy on those who have no refuge.
This unabated flow of divine ambrosia, shatters the aplomb of AzvAr-s and makes
them meltdown.
The EmperumAn in this case is none other
than Sri ArA amudhan and the quality is His 'mAdhuryam'.The streaming flow of this attribute is
described by AzvAr in the first line of thriuvAimozhi dedicated to this
EmperumAn
'ArA amudhEa adiyEan vudalam

anbAyEa, mERai alaindhu
karaiya vurukkuginRa nedu mAlEa' 5-8-1 of ThiruvAimozhi;
Sri Azhagiya maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr
zeroes in on this particular attribute, peculirar to this
particular EmperumAn and coins this
as
'kaLai kAN aTRArai vurukkum mAdhuryam kudamUkkil
pravahikkum' 164 of AchArya Hrhdyam.
Sri
MaNavALa mAmunikal in his commentary explains thus ' Those who have no
refuge other than Him-kaLaivAi thunbam kaLaiyAdhu
ozhivAi- are showered with His sweetness -mAdhuryam-ARAvamudhEa and they
meltdown in this -ArAvamudhEa -nErAi alaindhu karaiya
vurukkuginRa nedumAlEa.
The medical counsellors proscribe all
sweet things especially when one crosses the middle age. This sugar is said to
meltdowon organs slowly.
This divine sweetness is
indeed a welcome one-the mAdhuryam of
Thirukkudanthai
