Respected friends
I am happy we are taking a balanced view of this move by Mr
Karunanidhi.
When Brahmins have adopted all the other professions including some
in leather tanning, it is natural corollary the priests work can be
equally taken up by others and we should accept all deserving
priests from any Hindu community. After all, many great Alwars and
Nayanmars were not from Brahmin community.
But the worry is the objective of the CM of Tamil Nadu - he says it
is a tribute to Periyar, who for all his strong points, was a non
believer and called all believers Kattumirandis and immoral
(ayoggiyan). Hence I am very concerned whether the government in TN
which controls most of the temples in TN will dilute all norms
required to become priests and the training needs besides personal
habits etc. Already we have seen the extent to which temple
properties have been used up for other purposes leaving several
temples in bad conditions. We have to cautiously welcome this
socially very important move for the benefit of Hinduism as a whole
but must be careful of Government's intentions. That so many from
priestly community have left that profession and the country itself
has brought us to this situation and we cannot save our temples if
we do not accept all Hindus who wish to become priests to become one.
I visited my native place last month Therazhandur only to see a
magnificent temple in a lonely condition waiting for bhkthas. The
priest prayed and sang beautifully to three of us and I felt a great
distress. He said the nearby people from other Hindu communities are
willing to renovate and use the temple for the very purpose for
which it was built. That Aamaruviyappan temple was needing care and
Bhkthas was touching. Surely more priests from other communities
will help the situation. We Brahmins should take the lead in
training them shedding age old prejudices.

There are Brahmins by Nature among other Classes due to their
Knowledge and Enlightenment, Thus One can not apply the criterion of
one being a Brahmin By Birtha alone.
