Rivalry with Periya
PirAtti ?
"iruppadhu
aRindhum,. Agilum Asai
vidALAL"
Thirumangai AzhwAr talked about
thirumandhiram. Surrendered at naimisAraNyam and thiruvEnkatam. Rejoiced over
His mind falling at the feet of the Lord. Reached the extreme and spoke about
the greatness of being devoted to the devotees of sriman
nArAyaNA.
Despite all this the 'meet' with the emperumAn did not fructify. AzhwAr's
feelings and agony due to separation aggravarted and resulted in transformation
into feminine form of thirumangai AzhwAr "parakAla
nAyaki". Even this parakAla nAyaki was unable to lament her feelings.
The state of distress was in fact reported and narrated by her
mother.
Mother commences regarding AzhwAr's
craving by the following expressions.
"Oh! Lord your chest-the treasure chest-
is adorned by none other than 'periya pirAtti'
. Can anybody match the greatness of periya periAtti? Can anybody be at par with
Her beauty? Not realising this, Oh! em-perumAn, my daughter, out of her immense
love and affection is desiring You. It is well known that pirAtti is never
away from You and the intense affection You have towards
Her"
The mother's fear is the presence of
periya pirAtti. The mother apprehends that it may not be correct to be a rival
with periya pirAtti. The situation is aggravated by the fact that parkAla nAyaki
does know all this and still yearns for your eternal love-'Agilum Asai vidALAL'
What are AzhwAr's-parkAla
nAyaki- thoughts in this regard? Well, contrast to the fear of mother
that desiring the Lord who is with peirya pirAtti, the presence of peirya
priAtti Herself adds immense strength and courage to parkAla nAyaki. In fact,
parakAla nAyaki is not just appraoching the Lord but the "sriman nArAyaNA" . The characteristic of periya pirAtti
being 'purushakAram' -mediatrix is
comprehensively realisied by parkAla nAyaki and what in her mother's estimate
should be a dissuading factor is in fact an encouraging
aspect.
Thus, Agilum Asai
vidALAL- Still She does not abandon her love, does not hold good as our
philosophy in fact preaches this very thing-fall at the feet of the Lord who is
with peirya pirAtti.
This is what is categorically expressed by
thirumangai mannan in the first pAsuram of the seventh
ten-
'thivALum ven madhi pOle
thirumugathu arivai-sezhumkadal amudhinil piRandha
avaLum,'
nin Agathu iruppadhaRindhum,
Agilum Asai vidALAL............" 2-7-1;
