Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

Continuing on the study of how closely periyaazhvaar followed sreemadh bhagavatham, we will see some more close links. Dear sirs and madams, please excuse me – for - just I forgot to mention why I am not giving aazhvaar paasurams' commentary. This is already done by our sri Madhavk kaNNan swamy of simhapuri – singapore and is available in bhakti-list archives, srirangasri archives – starting from 2002 april onwards - in detailed manner.

D: Now paasuram 1-1-8

sri-suka uvacha

kadhaachid ouththaanika kouthukaaplavE janma rksha yOgE samavEtha yOshithaam |

vaadhithra geetha dhvija manthra vaachakais chakaara soonOr abhishEchanam sathee || --10- 7-4

TRANSLATION

Suka brahmam said: When mother Yas Odhaa's baby was slanting His body to attempt to rise and turn around, this attempt was observed by a Vedic ceremony. In such a ceremony, called uththaana, which is performed when a child is due to leave the house for the 1 st time, the child is properly bathed. Just after Krishna turned 3 months old, mother YasOdhaa celebrated this ceremony with other women of the neighborhood. On that day, there was a conjunction of the moon with the constellation Rohini. As the brahmanas joined by chanting Vedic hymns and professional musicians also took part, mother YasOdhaa observed this great ceremony.

paththu naaLum kadantha iraNdaa naaL

eththisaiyum saya maram kOdiththu

maththa maamalai thaangiya mainthanai

uththaanam seydhu uganthanar aayarE – 1-1-8.

Note: May be there, the time difference between aazhvaar and sukha brahmam.

sukha brahmam says – kadhaachith = when. This means – may be some time after the birth of krishNa.

Here aazhvaar says on 12th day – for this 'uththaanam seidhu'.

What is uththaanam? As per sukha it is child turning sidewards.

PVP says – "kaith thalaththilE thookki vaiththuk koNdu" – means child can be lifted in both hands by anybody – at that stage.

May be both are correct --

for in the third month only generally the child turns sidewards. That is what is sukha's version.

-         Aazhvaar says on 12th day – after the puNyaaha vaachanam - on 11 th day or 12th day only the child is allowed to be seen by others. Till 10 / 11 days except mother and perhaps the child's grandmother only can see the child. Others are not permitted – that was the practice - mainly from infection angle, in villages, those days.

E. Now paasuram 2-2-6 aravaNaiyaai padhigam --

Sri raaja uvaca

Nandha: kim akarOdh brahman srEya Evam mahOdhayam |

yasOdhaa cha mahaa bhaaga papou yasya: sthanam hari: || 10-8-46

TRANSLATION

Having heard of the great fortune of mother YasOdhaaa, Pareekshith Mahaaraaja inquired from Sukha brahmam: O learned brahmana, mother YasOdhaa's breast milk was sucked by the Supreme lord krishNa, What past auspicious activities did she and Nandha Mahaaraaja perform to achieve such perfection in ecstatic love?

Now aazhvaar's version --

minnanaiya nuNNidaiyaar virikuzhal mEl nuzhaindha vaNdu

innisaikkum villiputhoor inidhu amarndhaai | unaik kaNdaar

enna nOnbu nORRaaL kolO ivanaip peRRa vayiRu udaiyaaL

ennum vaarththai yeidhuviththa irudeekEsaa, mulai uNaayE   = 2-2-6

dear bhakthaas, Oh great, what pareekshit asked sukha brahma rishi in bhaagavatham is echoed by aazhvaar here, in yasOdhaa calling that lord, "oh come and suck my breasts, all these people throw words at me what is that thavam – penance I did to have you as my son sucking my breasts?"

"what she did she do to get that extraordinary privilege of having the lord as her son?

This was the theme in that 3 great krithis - covered as an article by MGVasudevan some time back – titled "enna thavam" available in www.karnatik.com website, besides archives of bhakti-lists.

enna thavam seidhanai yasOdhaa - by papanasam sivan

-         paNNiya puNNiyam yaadhu amma - by ambujam krishNa

-          engum illadhoru piLLai peRRaaL - by ooththukkadu venkata kavi with a line "sankai illaadhu inthap piLLaip peRRuk kola thavangaL iyaRRiyathu eththanai"

F. 1-1- 6 and 7 paasuram

Now bhaagavatham --

Ekadhaa arbhakam aadhaaya svaankam aarOpya bhaaminee |

peetha praayasya jananee saa [suthasya] ruchira smitham |

sooryEndhu vahni svasana ambudheemscha |

dhveepaan nagaams thadh duhithrr vanaani

bhoothaani yaani sthhira jangamaani || 10-7-36

TRANSLATION:

One day mother Yasoda, having taken KrishNa up and placed Him on her lap, was feeding Him milk from her breast with maternal affection. The milk was flowing from her breast, and the child was drinking it.

O King Pareekshith, when the child KrishNa almost finished drinking His mother's milk and mother Yasoda was touching Him and looking at His beautiful, brilliantly smiling face, the baby yawned, and mother Yasoda saw in His mouth the whole sky, the higher planetary system and the earth, the luminaries in all directions, the sun, the moon, fire, air, the seas, islands, mountains, rivers, forests, and all kinds of living entities, moving and nonmoving.

The following verse is appearing in some versions and not in all books says ISKCON founder – since context wise the verse matches well aazhvaar paasuram under reference, I am giving that --

Evam sa vavrdhE vishNur nandhagEhE janaardhana: |

kurvan anisam aanandham gOpaalanam sa-yOshitham ||

TRANSLATION:

To increase the pleasure of the gopas and the gopis, Krishna, the killer of all demons, was thus raised by His father and mother, Nandha and YasOdhaa."

Now verses from aazhvaar –

kaiyum kaalum nimirtthu kadaara neer

paiyavaatti pasunchiRu manjaLaal

aiya naa vazhitthALukku angu aanthida

vaiyam Ezhum kaNdAL piLLai vAyuLE. – 1-1-6

vaayuL vaiyagam kaNda mada nallaar

aayar putthiran allan arundheivam

paaya seerudaip paNbudai bAlakan

maayan enRu magizhndhanar maadharE – 1-1-7

See that small actions are reflected properly – jrmbitha- angu aandhida – pleasure of gOpaas – magizhndhanar maadharE. – oh great – krishNa, krishNa,

Let us continue with some more in next post. Then I will express what is my doubt.
