General Objectives

To provide training for health professions students, using a teaching/services curricular model designed to strengthen local health services and enhance community participation. This would lead to the creation of a working model for teachers and students, service professionals, and community representatives to use in jointly planning integrated health care services.

During the first year (1993), the following courses were involved:

· Introduction to Dentistry

· Behavioral Sciences

· Public Health I (Epidemiology)

· Periodontics

· Dental Services Internship

Introduction to Odontology

1993, 1st semester

The most important topics included in the UNI Project were the following:

· Scope of dentistry

· Role of health care team components

· Health services organization and operation

· Value of non-professional health care staff

· Primary health care strategies

· Visits to different primary health care settings

· Observation of multi-professional teams at work

· Observation of individual health professionals at work

· Community activities: caries prevention in schools (NaF mouthwash)

Behavioral Sciences

1993, 2nd semester

The program was implemented in accordance with the objectives and activities of the Project:

· Field work in communities

· Study of health knowledge, actions and practice

Public Health I

(General Epidemiology)

1993, 2nd semester

Analysis of community health situations using epidemiologic methods of investigation.

Periodontics I

1993, 2nd semester

Prevention of periodontal diseases in school children and municipal school teachers in the cities of Nunoa and Penalolen.

Clinical activities will be carried out after dental office implementation at Rosita Renard and Carol Urzua settings.

Dental Services Internship

1993, 1st and 2nd semesters

· Program objectives and activities according to the Project.

· Integrated activities in which students develop their professional role in offices, communities and hospitals

· Clinical work carried out in offices belonging to different health services of the metropolitan area

· Promotion, fostering, recovery and rehabilitation activities rendered at primary and secondary care levels for different age groups

· Training course designed for faculty members participating in the UNI Project, with focus on problem-solving

· Participatory community diagnosis and identification of risk factors.
