There is at least a page of text and description that could go with any picture of this kind; surely that's a more appropriate way forward than trying to reduce the richness of a photograph to a single word or phrase.

I like the idea of a photo with a bunch of the stuff labeled. Or maybe even one of those "find the items in this picture" type photos where we have to find the stuff but stuff to find is listed in Greek. Somehow I think that constantly saying hIPPOS in my head while looking for a horse might make the words stick.

I played around with putting something together like Rosetta Stone. It looks like it should be relatively easy using powerpoint. If you really want to go through with this decide on what vocabulary you need and ask for volunteers to match up the pictures with your vocabulary. You can count on me to help.

I suggest we take old (in the public domain) children's books with pictures and translate them and copy the pictures ;)

A good idea for a different project and a different thread. Find some books you like, and go for it!

My goal would be to have a set of images and glosses that anyone can use, with any software, or for print, or whatever.

Good advice - and thanks for your offer to help. Any other volunteers out there?

Here are the pictures I would most love to have now - please make sure you search for images that are reusable, see the first post in this thread. Here, "done" means I have posted one in this thread, "needed" means we don't have one yet.

1. Personal pronouns

ἐγώ - done http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/vie ... =790#p3339
σύ - done http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/vie ... =790#p3351
αὐτός - done http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/vie ... =790#p3341
αὐτή - would like better ones, see αὐτός http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/vie ... =790#p3349
αὐτό - needed. this was a joke: http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/vie ... =790#p3350
ἡμεῖς - needed
ὑμεῖς - needed
αὐτοί - needed

Note: once you have personal pronouns, you can use them to drill verb forms.

ἐγώ ἀγαπῶ.
σύ;

Jonathan, Is your intention to make this material available on the web, or in what form?

A long time ago I started putting together a few web pages towards a first lesson in Greek, with the intention of helping my students. To my shame, it didn't even make it to the end of the first lesson http://www.users.on.net/~alexali/Didask ... 01p01.html. That it's still there in cyberspace is simply a testimony to inertia. However, this note is simply to indicate my own interest in such a project as you're proposing, and so to suggest also that line drawings have some advantages over photographs, as photographs often contain too much information. If sound were added, we could then have lively discussions about pronunciation, too!

You might want to take a look at the way they introduce pronouns on livemocha. For the word "I" they just add a speech bubble to the picture when having the subject make a statement as "I am tall," or "I am young." For "you" they show two people looking directly at each other with a speech bubble while the subject states something like "You are a man." For he, she, we, or they the lesson shows the people without a speech bubble. I think it does a pretty decent job of conveying the concept.

Hi, Alex,

I like very much what you did both in concept and execution. Sure, it would have been great to have produced more, but we are grateful for what you did do. εὐχαριστῶ σοι.

I'm bumping this topic as a reminder for those who weren't here or have forgotten it.
