Belshazzar's Feast

Oct. 30, 1884 – This cartoon by newcomer Walt McDougall appeared on the front page of the New York World the morning after a lavish dinner for Blaine hosted by wealthy industrialists. The party is dining on "lobby pudding" and "monopoly soup" while a laborer and his family beg for crumbs. The cartoon, though crude, caused a sensation and marked the beginning of cartoons as a viable form of expression in daily newspapers. It is often cited as a contributing factor in Blaine's defeat.
