U.S. NAVY SHIP CAMOUFLAGE -- WORLD WAR II -- Listed by Design Number

Measure 31a, Design 8B

The third of a trio** of Measure 31a schemes prepared for older battleships in October 1944, Design 8B was applied to USS Texas (BB-35) for a short time during the latter part of that year. The only other ship known to have worn this design, USS New York (BB-34), carried it during the last few months of 1944 and into 1945. Both finished the World War II era in the dark single-color Measure 21. During 1942-1944 these ships were painted in the horizontally-divided two-color Measure 22. Earlier in 1942 they wore the blotchy patterns of Measure 12 (Modified).

Like the other Measure 31a battleship schemes, Design 8B was relatively dark, but lighter overall than was typical of Measure 31 designs. Colors used on vertical surfaces included Navy Blue (5-N), Ocean Gray (5-O) and Haze Gray (5-H). Decks and other exterior horizontal surfaces were painted Deck Blue (20-B). Unlike the great majority of Measure 31-32-33 designs, this one had virtually identical patterns on starboard and port sides.

Photographs of New York wearing Measure 31a, Design 8B, include Photo #s: NH 104833 and NH 63525. Photo # 80-G-289714 is a view of Texas during the brief period that she was painted in this camouflage scheme.

Initials appearing on the drawings presented here indicate that their designer/draftsman was Everett Warner ("EW").

** The other two were Design 6B and Design 7B.
