USS Bell (Destroyer # 95, later DD-95), 1918-1939

USS Bell, a 1060-ton (standard displacement) Little class destroyer built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned at the end of July 1918. During the remainder of World War I she was employed on north Atlantic convoy duty and in December 1918 helped escort the transport George Washington, which was carrying President Woodrow Wilson to Europe for post-war diplomatic negotiations. Bell remained active with the Atlantic Fleet for another year and a half. In July 1920, soon after being placed in reserve status, she was designated DD-95. The destroyer was formally decommissioned in June 1922 and laid up. She was reduced to a hulk in August 1936, stricken from the Navy List in July 1937 and sold in April 1939.

USS Bell was named in honor of Rear Admiral Henry H. Bell (1808-1868), who lost his life in a boat accident in January 1868, while commanding the Asiatic Squadron.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Bell (Destroyer # 95, later DD-95).

Destroyers fitting out on 20 June 1918.
USS Murray (Destroyer # 97) is in the foreground, with USS Stribling (Destroyer # 96) outboard. In the middle distance are USS Bell (Destroyer # 95), with USS Dyer (Destroyer # 84) inboard of her. These four destroyers had builder's hull numbers 303, 302, 301 and 279, respectively, and these numbers are painted in small numerals on the ships' bows.
A submarine is on the building ways in the background, under the large crane. It is probably USS S-1 (Submarine # 105) or one of the AA-1 class.
