USS Milwaukee (Cruiser # 21), 1906-1917

USS Milwaukee, a 9700-ton St. Louis class protected cruiser built at San Francisco, California, was commissioned in December 1906. She spent her entire career, lasting just over a decade, primarily operating along the West Coast, visiting ports from Central America to Canada. In the summer of 1908 the cruiser also steamed to Hawaii. During 1913-1915, while part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Milwaukee made several short cruises. One of these, embarking members of the Washington State Naval Militia, took her back to Hawaiian waters.

In March 1916 Milwaukee became flagship for the Pacific Fleet Coast Torpedo Force, whose combatant ships included destroyers, torpedo boats and submarines. Outfitted with extra workshops and other facilities, she spent some of that year supporting these smaller vessels as well as participating in patrols along the coast of Mexico. In January 1917, after USS H-3 went hard aground near Eureka, California, Milwaukee steamed up from Mare Island Navy Yard to try to pull the submarine off the beach. In the course of this effort, she was stranded herself during the early morning of 13 January. After her crew was removed and some equipment and stores were brought ashore, USS Milwaukee was formally decommissioned in early March 1917. Her hull, by now further stripped by salvors and broken in two by the power of the Pacific coast surf, was sold in August 1919.
