USS Rockford, a 1430-ton Tacoma class frigate, was built at Los Angeles, California. She was commissioned in March 1944 with a U.S. Coast Guard crew. Rockford went to the southwest Pacific in mid-year, operating in that area until November 1943. During that time, she made several attacks on possible enemy submarines. Following an overhaul in the U.S., the frigate was sent to Alaska, where she was on duty until leased to the Soviet Union in August 1945.
Returned to the United States in November 1949, Rockford was laid up in Japan. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, she was prepared for reactivation and loaned in October 1950 to the Republic of Korea Navy. Renamed Apnok, she served on Korean War patrol and blockade missions until returned to the U.S. Navy in September 1952. She was stricken from the Navy list in May 1953 and sunk as a target in September of that year.
