The name of the -ISM (N.) project - drawn from The American Heritage Dictionary - means "action, process; practice" as a suffix, and a "doctrine; theory; system of principles" as a noun. This definition is symbolic of the project's overall goal of civic engagement. To be engaged, a person must take action in a process, and it takes practice to engage effectively. The civic accountability of this engagement entails dealing with a diversity of doctrines, theories and systems of principles that are constructed in part by our identities such as race, gender, class and religion.
