Lighthouses of Burundi

The Republic of Burundi is a landlocked nation in Central Africa, located northwest of Tanzania. Along with Rwanda, its neighbor to the north, it was colonized by Germany as part of German East Africa in 1891. Both countries were occupied by Belgian troops in 1916, during World War I, and they remained under Belgian rule, first under a League of Nations mandate and then under UN trusteeship, until they became independent in 1962.

Burundi has a coastline on the northeastern end of Lake Tanganyika. The largest of Africa's rift valley lakes, Lake Tanganyika is 676 km (420 mi) long in a north–south direction and about 50 km (30 mi) in width. Burundi shares the lake with Tanzania, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There is commercial shipping on the lake and ferries connect its ports. The city of Bujumbura, Burundi's largest city, faces the lake and includes the country's commercial and ferry ports.
