Lighthouses of North Macedonia

The Republic of North Macedonia (Северна Македонија, Severna Makedonija in Macedonian) is a landlocked nation located north of Greece and between Albania and Bulgaria. As the Socialist Republic of Macedonia it was one of the six constituents of the Yugoslav federation. When Yugoslavia broke apart in 1991 it declared its independence as the Republic of Macedonia. Greece objected to this name because the majority of the historic region of Macedonia is in Greece. This dispute lasted until an agreement in 2018 led to the country changing its name officially to North Macedonia.

Navigation in North Macedonia is limited to lakes, especially Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest lakes in Europe. The lake is 30.5 km (19 mi) long and nearly 15 km (9 mi) wide. More than 2/3 of the lake is in North Macedonia; the southwestern portion is in Albania.
