We can do testing in the lab in simple interaction trials. I'd have to show Paul how to do that, but they can be done. We are right now developing the lab set-up to do these comparisons.
The design is:
Obtain the Agribacterium vitis culture, preferably from the vines so you have the local culture. Plate the organisms on a agar medium allowing for it to grow - there are specific media for these different organisms so check the scientific literature to determine the correct medium. Order from Difco.
Grow the A. radiobacter in the commercial culture on another plate of the medium. On a third plate, put squares of the pathogen around the outside of the plate. In the middle of the plate, put a square of the potential bio-control. See if the bio-control actually suppresses or prevents the growth of the pathogen.
You need to be able to autoclave the plates once you are done, so you don't spread a huge inoculum of the disease all through the landfill. OK?
We have the ability to do these kinds of tests at SFI. So, those of you who want this kind of work done, the cost depends on the hours it takes to culture and grow the organisms. Probably on the order of $300 to $800 per paired (pathogen - bio-control) test.
