We have just formed a sister company to Alaska Humus Company which has a
newly activated website -- www.closetoinfinity.com -- designed to explain
and sell a brand new optical product (Jeff and I represented the inventor)
which is being produced by Brunton (108 year old compnay headquartered in
Riverton, Wyoming -- terrific reputation, first known for the Brunton
compass, now with 250 plus products, including the Optimus camping stove,
GPS systems, binoculars, etc.). As part of our formal association with
Brunton, we are now dealers for their products, with particular emphasis on
this brand new optical device.

The product (called the Brunton MacroScope) is a completely unique and
innovative monocular, with high quality optics (7 X 40) and a totally novel
side-focus wheel. Anyone from 5 to 95 can use it with complete ease. But
what's utterly compelling about it -- in addition to its incredible easy,
ultra-intuitive method of focusing -- is that the MacroScope focuses from
infinity all the way down to 18 inches! Complete viewing versatility from a
bee on a flower at 18 inches to a bull moose at 1800 feet to everything in
between. Absolutely nothing like it anywhere. It was invented here in
Alaska by a long-time biologist friend of ours (Dr. L. James Shields) and
was inspired by his decades-long frustration with having no decent,
functional close-focus optics to magnify all the tiny, diverse invertebrates
in the tidal marsh below his home here in Anchorage. Using his "workbench"
version of what became the Brunton MacroScope, he actually discovered a new
genus of bristleworm. Anyway, I hope it's not inappropriate to use this
Sunday forum to introduce the Brunton MacroScope to our fellow
Composteadors. If you have a chance to visit our new website, I think
you'll agree that there are several direct applications for this unique
instrument as an extension of the kinds of work, research and interests
shared by the many backyard and professional naturalists on this list.
