Sludge on the bottom of the brewer is not good. You tend to collect all the fungi in the sludge - they get caught in there and don't leave. Then as the brew goes on, bacteria MAY grow in the sludge, and since oxygen movement into the sludge may be limited, we have problems.
I think Judi's idea of directing a stream of air at the bottom of the brewer is a good one, so that sludge doesn't collect or build up. Keep it in suspension as much as possible.
