Hi Dorothy,

Yes, its seems black rot is still the pathogen-to-suppress. From what I
understand and the people that I have talked to, black rot is one of the
most difficult diseases to manage using compost tea.

We are working on figuring out a least toxic management strategy for
black rot that would be compatible with compost tea. Various
organic-approved fungicides are being evaluated.

One of the interesting things that we found was that compost tea seemed
to reduce powdery mildew levels (compared to no-spray control
treatments), but increased downy mildew levels.

One quick note: the commercial growers did not consider the control of
powdery mildew to be acceptable for them in a commercial operation, but
the suppression that we did observe was very impressive to pathologists
coming from a conventional background.

As far as downy mildew, our PSU collaborators have done work with
phosphorus acid for controlling downy mildew and have had great success.
So we are looking at some alternatives to incorporate into the
management program that would be compatible with compost tea.

If anyone has any suggestions for managing black rot with techniques /
products that are organic and compatible with compost tea please come
forth.

Matthew-- Thanks for posting the Rodale/SARE link.
The report was somewhat encouraging. Most
discouraging was that CT failed to control or prevent
Black Rot, the nemesis of eastern grape growers.

I would be interested to know if the growers
considered other organic remedies in conjunction with
CT. For example, copper and/or baking soda based
sprays. (in succession, not together) Also, Surround,
hydrogen peroxide base?

I have been using a sort of shotgun approach in my
vineyard, alternating CT with these other organic
tools. Some results have been encouraging, but no
replicated studies to support. Another obvious point
is that we find some varieties respond lots better
than others to organic programs. For example,
Chambourcin, a part of the study, is very suscpetible
to Black Rot and other diseases.

Have others on the list succeeded in conquering black
rot? I would be interested in hearing any comments.
