For the past few years, Mr. Malcolm Beck, San Antonio's primer
organic farmer and promoter, has organized the Valley Conference on
Sustainable Agriculture. The 2004 conference was held two weeks ago
to a standing room only crowd in Weslaco, Texas. What has happened
down there is the USDA's subtropical agricultural research center in
the Texas Rio Grande Valley has declared that their center will be
an organic research area. Malcolm has capitalized on their interest
by bringing in speakers from around all over the U.S. to talk about
their successes in using organic methods and materials with the idea
being to stimulate the flow of research ideas. Keep in mind the
researchers were not necessarily organic minded before their boss
declared they would be, so some of them have to unlearn a few things
they were taught in school. Here is a link to Malcolm's website
where he kept the conference schedule

If you'll notice from the speakers' list, there were very few
research academics or government folks. The speakers were organic
producers and sustainable agriculture promoters from all over.
Again, the idea is to stimulate research.

So what about it? Malcolm does a 20 minute bit on a Sunday morning
organic gardening radio program in San Antonio. Yesterday based on
the discussions at the conference, he declared that 2004 was going
to be The Year of Compost Tea. In fact he bought a compost tea
brewer and plans to sell fresh tea at farmer's markets on weekends.

Malcolm is an institution in San Antonio. What Malcolm says to the
relatively large organic community in San Antonio is pretty golden.
When he gets interested in a subject, the entire community gets
interested. Based on his comment this weekend, I expect to see
enthusiastic interest in compost tea usage with significant increase
in amateur production in San Antonio.

For what it's worth, I think the rest of the industry will notice
the blip.
