At Doc Elaine's last seminar in New Zealand, she mentioned a cesspit on a
diary farm (in the USA) where they were at a loss to what to do.  It was so
loaded with e-coli that they couldn't do anything with it.  Solution: heavy
duty aeration.  I don't know/remember if any innoculation was used.  Result:
after some time they could not find any e-coli at all!  Of course, they
couldn't leave it at that but continued testing, getting the same result
each time.

Of course, aeration has been in use in sewage treatment plants for a long
time.  However, I'm not sure that they attempt to maintain any particular
level of DO.
