If you have soil that wont take water, or is cracked
when dry, then you may have high magnesium levels.
Here in Idaho every soil we have tested in the past
couple of years is high in magnesium and the common
argument is that we have high calcium soils. Doesnt
matter. If the magnesium to calcium levels are out of
balance and the magnesium is over 20% you could be
losing as much as 15 bushels of corn per acre. The
only way to lower the magnesium is by using another
calcium source. Make sure the fineness of grind is
where it will be available in the first six months or
this season or be prepared to wait for 3 years for the
full effect as in Gypsum. The other alternative is
Sulfur which we all know is a fungicide and every soil
i have tested save a few are low on fungus. Albrecht
said every other mineral rides into the plant over
calcium, so if we need to floculate the soil or
correct out of balance conditions lets concentrate on
calcium and magnesium first then add the biology to
prevent reforming compaction levels. Since foliar
feeding is said to be 25x more efficient than ground
fertilizing we can use products like Organic Gem that
has over 50 diff micronutrients to make up for the
other defficiencies.
