[compost_tea] Re: Contained Compost

Mike, you're right.  Contained means compost in the machine is contained in
some kind of filter bag - Titel mentioned landscape cloth, I believe,
commercial machines come with mesh bags or screens, up to 1mm or so
openings.  Best material I've found is monofilament nylon mesh, if you can
find it, unless you can afford stainless steel mesh.  Lots of people use
plain, polyester fiber paint filters, and nylon stockings can be used, too.
There are probably dozens of ways.

Helps extraction to have some kind of agitation or aeration in the bag.  I
have a couple of small machines using a paint filter I fill halfway or less
and just shake and massage by hand every once in a while.

Alternative (main one anyway, I think) is compost loose in the tank or
bucket, which a lot of folks including Ted use. Main purpose of containment
is to keep big (i.e., greater than your bag mesh opening size...) compost
pieces out of the liquid.  Most who use loose compost filter the liquid to
remove the big pieces after the batch is done, for spraying.

I still think if you're going to filter it's better to filter on the front
end.  ...And I'm sure you wanted to hear all this, hmm?
