But with wood chips, please make sure the wood is aged for a time to let the phenols, terpenes etc to gas-off.  In the work that Malcolm in Texas does and the use of wood in Canada, the wood material is treated, by steaming, by letting air, letting age, whatever, before you put down anywhere near the roots of the plants. 

If you use FRESH wood chips, please make sure the soil is in a healthy condition, so you have a buffer between the "N-suck-up" capacity of fresh wood, and the roots that also need N.  As bacteria and fungi decompose pure wood chips, they can prevent plant roots from getting any N. 

OR compost the fresh wood, so decomposition occurs before you place the wide C:N ratio materials on or near the roots.
