Re: [compost_tea] chlorine and chloramine removal with aquarium
The only way I could do that would be to find a water district that uses ch=
lorine. I don't think there are many because chloramine gives a bigger ban=
g for the buck. I could artifically add chlorine but I don't think that an=
y results derived from that would be conclusive because it wouldn't be the =
same as municipally treated water.
I have a project upcomming in Feb-Mar area where I will be using untreated =
pond water as the basis for tea in a native plant restoration project. So =
I have to come up with some tests and a methodology that will give me the r=
esults I want.
However, I have found that a minimum of 6 hours aeration before tea is brew=
ed using water with chloramine is essential.
Now, I have one project where I will be using secondary treatment effluent =
water for tea. I have sent the water out for a test so I will see what the=
constitutents of the water are before I start.
A note on soil testing:
By the way, as far as soil tests go, I recommend that soil tests be taken b=
efore the start of any project where tea is either foliar applied or soil s=
oaked. Plant assays are important too but if you are using tea for soil re=
storation, you need to know what type of soil you are dealing with. The ty=
pe of soil will determine how you apply tea, whether you need to aerate and=
how often and how well your root systems and biology will "take" in the so=
il. Sandy soil behaves totally differently than clayey soil and the biolog=
y is somewhat different. This is especially true when woking with areas cl=
ose to a stream. So soil test are important.
The nice thing about a soil test is that it is rather inexpensive. Also, w=
hen you take your soil sample, make sure you get below the humus level into=
the soil. Humus an roots and organic matter in the soil will skew the lab=
readings. A reputable lab will give you a warning before they test if you=
send them a soil sample with lots of organic matter.
