Well, this is a tough one because it depends on what you are composting and
what materials you are composting. It is generally thought that presence o=
f
worms in soil is a sure sign of health. However, for California Coastal
native plants, the presence of worms is undesirable. The sandy soil they
thrive in doesn't support a biology that is beneficial for worms.

[Tom Jaszewski] I'm certain the source material would make a difference and
I believe that's been demonstrated, although I can't find the citations jus=
t
now. But the discussion doesn't really have anything to do with CA coastal
plants when stating compost has more diversity than vermicompost. You do
make a very interesting point here!

I know the general thinking is that vermicompost and the digestive action o=
f
the worms gives a higher bacterial count. However, worms have specific
digestive systems and composting worms, like the Red Tiger, are different
from earthworms. Also, what goes into a worm bin can determine what the
vermicompost is made of but doesn't necessarily mean that the vermicompost
will magically be embued with diverse bacteria in your local area.

[Tom Jaszewski] Curiously the vermicompost from Orner Farms has tested very
consistent and quite high. They control the inputs carefully and there is
data published indicating that the fungal diversity of vermicompost IS
higher. Thus far I've not found a study regarding bacterial diversity.

Testing I have done using vermicompost as part of a tea brew show no
significant differences in tea quality and effectiveness on plants. I have
my best results, as viewed through soil analysis and plant assay, when I us=
e
a highly-diverse, locally based compost as the basis of my tea. When I go t=
o
a new area, I try to get as much diversity as possible from that area and
add it to any "starter" compost I may use from my location. When I do that=
,
I get the best results and these are verified by testing.

[Tom Jaszewski] Again I have seen a difference in suppression testing as
have others.

I'm not intending to refute your opinion nor am I defending the study, I
just find the data interesting.

I had hoped to find the abstract as I'm to pressed for time to retype, but
here's a quote from "Compost Science and Utilization" Vol.12, No. 2
Characterization of Fungal Biodiversity In Compost and Vermicompost
Antonella Anastasi, Giovanna C. Varese, Samuele Voyron, Silvano Scannerini
and Valeria Filipello Marchisio

"A total of 193 entities were isolated: 54 from green compost only, 77 from
vermicompost only, 62 from both."

If you make high-quality compost, you can get more diversity than you would
from vermicompost.

[Tom Jaszewski] Opinion here or testing?
