Butch asked me to define disturbance -

Disturbances such as:

Fire - pay attention to intensity.  Flash fire that burns surface veg usually harms very little.  Fire that burns OM in soil is a huge disturbance.

Floods - again, intensity is important.  Puddling for a few hours just indicates compaction getting serious, do something about it now.  A flood in spring when temps are warm means serious loss of beenficials in the soil.  A flood in the fall, when things are dormant anyway, no big deal from an existing organism point of view.  May be serious if you don't have the biology present to hold your soil in place.

Wind storm
Drought - how long?  a few weeks, months or years?  Impact is greater the longer it continues

Heavy rainfall - can compact bare soil
Tornado....

Herd of buffalo - again, how big?  Compaction depends on soil health, and how many buffalo, whether they were running, etc

Herd of cattle - how many, how long on one spot, wallowing, how much vegetation, etc are all factors determining intensity of impact.

Tilling - intensity is critical here too

Pesticides

the list goes on, but hopefully you have the concept.
