MY two cents worth.
Isn't long term use of mushroom compost bad for the soil? I think i heard it
causes compaction which means its killing off good biology.
I don't think registered organic growers are allowed to use it. I've never
used it.

I have never had a problem using sawdust as a surface mulch BUT put down a
layer of newspaper first (about 8 to 10 pages thick). Gives the bacteria
plenty read while the sawdust decomposes :-)
