New yard bird

I spent several hours today doing desk work, odd jobs, and
looking out of the sliding glass doors at the snow-covered back yard.
I've had lots of house finch traffic and most of the regulars have
checked in. However, I was quite surprised when a gull showed up
over the street immediately behind the house. I got my binoculars and
saw at least a half dozen ring-billed gulls, either adults or
second-winter birds, wheeling and soaring. I have no idea what
attracted them. The nearest pond, where I've never seen them, is a
half mile away and there are no large shopping centers within a mile
or two.
      Snow on December 3?
