crane sighting

Hi birders. Its not likely we'll ever know the species of wader that was
seen in Fuquay, unless it appears again. It could well be a Wood Stork as
suggested by Will. I was one of the people who spoke with this woman and
asked her repeatedly about the field marks she was describing.
Unfortuneately she did not have binoculars so her description should be
taken with caution, but she was familiar with birds and felt the bird
was a good deal larger than a Great-blue Heron, and insisted that it did
not have a 'naked' head like a Wood Stork. Still hard to tell without
binoculars. I don't know what she saw, but given the sightings of
Sandhill Crane in NC and a Whooping Crane in TN this year, we shouldn't
rule them out. A Wood Stork in Fuquay would still be an unusual
sighting. I asked her to call John Gerwin with her description, and I
guess he felt as I did, that she indeed saw something odd and seemed to
know what she was talking about, so it was worth the posting. Hopefully
it will turn up again.
