Folks,
At about 4:30 PM this date I was checking Lake Julian in Buncombe
County for waterfowl. I figured I could get my last hoorah for 2000 in. I
observed a merganser type duck all by itself in the middle of the lake off
the picnic shelter at waters edge, in Lake Julian Park. Due to the extreme
temperatures, there was still some steam coming off the water making ID
difficult. I observed the bird for about 30 minutes, and it finally swam to
a sheltered point about halfway between the picnic area and the dam. I was
finally able to see that it was a female, Common Merganser. This is the
first one I have ever seen in the 14 years I have lived here. I hope the
bird stays around for others to see. I would suggest that the best time to
try for the bird is mid to late in the day, when the steam on the water is
at it's least amount.
Happy New Year,
Wayne
